Outreach & Mission

We believe that nothing we have received as a consequence of our relationship with Jesus is ours to hide or hold onto.  Instead we are called to give it away, to share the fullness of ourselves beyond the walls of the church.  Here at HFUMC that means we are intentional about finding ways to put our hands to work for the kingdom of God.  We do this through our own ministries and by joining with others for a greater impact.  We encourage every member of our community to commit to service in any one of these outreach or missional ministries.

Food Bank Work Teams

To make resources stretch the East Texas Food Bank depends upon volunteers to operate its programs.  HFUMC has for many years provided volunteer teams to work at the bank processing and re-packaging food.  Volunteer teams leave from the church on scheduled days and work half a day in the Tyler facility.  Work done by our teams is credited to Helping Hands to discount the cost of food they receive from the food bank.  Come join us.

Newgate Mission Service

Volunteers from HFUMC are regularly scheduled to help serve meals at the Longview Newgate Mission, a ministry of the United Methodist Church.  SIgn-up is available in Young Hall when a team is being prepared.

Hawkins Helping Hands

In Hawkins, HFUMC is directly engaged with our community through support and volunteering through Helping Hands.  Helping Hands provides a food pantry, clothing, a thrift shop and other assistance to meet the needs of those struggling in our community.  Those wishing to volunteer or make donations should do so directly through the staff of Helping Hands.

UMCOR

UMCOR is the connectional agency within the United Methodist Church that oversees and coordinates the larger church's response to significant or disaster needs around the world.  HFUMC continues to provide financial support for UMCOR.  As needs are identified HFUMC has provided disaster buckets and hygiene kits as well as financial support.

Chicks with Sticks

Chicks with Sticks is a fellowship and ministry of yarn...and sticks.  Knitting, crocheting skills are shared to support and encourage others.  The group produces caps for newborns and young children and prayer shawls and throws for those in the hospitals and other care facilities.  Other items are made as needs are identified.  We have supported Parkland Hospital through the Warm Up America Foundation, Newgate Mission, Highway 80 Mission, Rainbow Room, Refuge of Light, UT Cancer Center, Child Advocacy and Women's Shelter with our work.  You do not have to be a church member to participate.  Please contact the church office for meeting times and locations.
